Shifters Chapter 2 Cover

And so the new Chapter begins!

If you are an old Shifters fan a lot of this should look familiar, at least storywise but with a LOT more expanded content and context. Much like last chapter established the events BEFORE the dance (giving context as to why the vampires were after Alice, and why Ferrah was targeted by them…) there will be even more context in this chapter, and I have to say I’m just giddy with the upcoming transformation scenes. They should be quite bitching if my hand and brain can see to working together as they have been.

You may be a little curious about the space cat at the side of the cover. If you haven’t seen, Evil Space Cat Productions is my studio name for my comics and associated stuff. Its also where my store is. When I’m at conventions, I have to often give a Business name and because I do multiple comics its just easier to go under Evil Space Cat.

Mysti and I will be at Vcon at the end of this month, so if you are in Vancouver for a little sci-fi and fantasy convention goodness, come and check us out! Next week will be the first story page. Its already done, so we are working well towards getting a buffer. ( hopefully).

There is also the donation meter for the new pages. IT will tick up for every 50$ donated, which will give one extra page update next month. The current total for donations towards new pages is 5$.

I might also make this cover into a wallpaper. Do you guys like that idea?

Chapter End Caption Contest

As I said last week, this week is a break week between the old and new chapters. So we have a little game for anyone who wants to play it. We don’t have any official prizes per se, but all the submissions we get will go into a gallery for posterity and everyone’s potential amusement. All you have to do is save the jpg of the blanked out page I’ve selected and fill in the dialogue balloons with alternate dialogue for the characters. When you’ve got your masterpiece of hilarity, either post it in the forums in the Shifters area, post a link to it in this post, or email it to me at shadowsmyst@gmail.com. Next week I will post everything I get. Anyone can participate at any time so if you are a new reader, reading through the archives and come upon this for the first time, even months or years down the road and want to send one of these in to me, I’ll put it on the gallery page. Next week we’ll resume regular updates. I’ve also go the extra page meter up. If you want to see more frequent updates for the month of October, consider donating. Every little bit adds up!

How the donation meter works

As you can probably see (and why you might have clicked on the donation meter), that we have a bit of a page drive going on as it were.

Some people were complaining there wasn’t enough Shifters. And we agree, but because both Mysti (the colorist) and I have bills and such to pay, we normally have to take paying commissions, work, or do other income generating activities. This leaves us with only enough time currently to make one page a week.

BUT with your help, that could change.

For every $75 USD we recieve in donations, we will add ONE additional page to the scheduled pages for the following month. SO this means that if we get say $150 in donations for September, in October we will put out two extra pages. The reason for this is so that we can plan our time. Often we are booked months in advance for commissions or extra work (I teach classes for example in addition to my full time job, never mind whatever paying commissions or graphic design freelance I have, and after they start I have to plan around them.)

The idea is that because Shifters is providing that income we need to make ends meet, we won’t have to keep burdening ourselves with work that ISN’T Shifters related. You guys get more pages, and we get to keep a roof over our heads. Its win-win.

As the donations trickle in, every time we hit a +1 page milestone the donation meter will tick up. This helps show how many bonus pages will be scheduled for next month. If donations for a month do not reach enough for a page, the money will go into a special side account for Shifters related activities, such as merchandise development/purchasing, advertising, con fees, website hosting, etc. This will help tremendously in getting the word out about Shifters being back, and bring more people to the site, which will hopefully help everything along.

Currently we have our donations set up to be accepted through Paypal. However if you want to donate and do not want to use paypal, drop me a line at shadowsmyst (at) gmail dot com and we can work out some alternate form of payment.

Shifters Podcast – Episode 1

Welcome to the first Shifters podcast! In this episode we do a bit of a question and answer session. Questions were provided to the forums, and we answered them!

Chapter 1 Pg 32

Well, after… five years? Chapter 1 is finally complete! Here we finally get to see what the new vampires look like without their masks. And now you know why they decide to target Ferrah.

There will be a little break here, one week between this issue and the next one starting up so that we can rebuild a bit of backlog to ensure the next chapter continues on-time and on schedule.

There was a question regarding if Shifters would ever update more than once a week. My response to that question is in the forums. I think I will be going ahead with putting up the tipjar, and for every 50$ we get in September, we will add one additional page into the October schedule (we need to plan these things in advance so it has to be for a month in advance) So you can expect some minor tweeks to the website soon to track how much has been donated.

The kinsmir t-shirts are also still available from the store, and I’ll be hopefully getting some more things up into it, like buttons and prints, soon here, as well getting the first Shifters book printed. (*fingers crossed*)

Another exciting thing is that we just recorded our first podcast! I will be posting it later this week in its own section (MORE website renos…). We are currently trying to schedule them every 2 weeks, but if there’s the demand, we may go higher. In the spirit of that, make sure to post your questions to the forum thread!

Cos & Effect was pretty awesome, I met a lot of great people. I hope some of them found their way here. 🙂 Shifters is also now in Inkoutbreak. If you haven’t checked out this new way to find/read comics, its pretty neat.

Oh so close, only one more page before the chapter is FINISHED! And nearly 3 months of regular updates! Huzzah!

Ferrah is still oblivious to the fact that Kat has bigger problems than what is going on at the dance. And really, her skin watch is that cool.

Chapter 1 Pg 29

We are up to page 29! Exciting! Its almost the end of the chapter! Woo! And we haven’t missed a day yet since launch. Come close a few times… but we managed to get it up!

A little world exposition in this page, subtle, but present. More will be explained later but we’ve learned a lot in a single page, so much more than the whole CHAPTER in the last story. whoo for better story telling skills.

I now have a store! The first major item? A bitchin Shifters shirt based of Ferrah’s kinsmir form!

The only color is grey right now, but if you order one this week, you will probably get it faster than later because I’m just placing an order for Cos & Effect and its easy to throw a few more shirts in that order if I know they are bought.

I will be selling the cool shirts, comics, jewelry, and more at Cos & Effect this weekend August 13-14 in the Artist alley at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver! If you are in Vancouver, BC this coming weekend come and check it out! A cosplay extravaganza!

Its August, that makes two months of steady Monday updates for everyone. How’s them apples?

In this page we get a little bit of info about Ferrah’s super shiny cyber watch. A biomonitor, for those who don’t know is a little bit of cyberware that monitors your vital signs. It could tell you if you have a fever or if you are fighting an infection, or if you’re blood alcohol level is too high, if you’ve been drugged… all sorts of uses.

Also, as a fun factoid. It is Illegal to be barefoot on the Vancouver Skytrain. You can be kicked off for ‘inappropriate footwear’. That’s where I got the idea that it is also illegal in Shade City and you will be kicked off the tram unless you put on some shoes. Tough beans for a Shifter that’s lost their footwear.

Ferrah’s mom will be playing a bit larger of a roll in the new comic, so you can see she cares about her daughter, taking her to the spa for her birthday. If you’ve never been to the spa, I can’t recommend at least one visit enough. Especially the pedicures. Oh my GOD. *melts*

It’s Monday! You know what that means.

Back to Ferrah and Kat. Did you remember that Kat’s real name is Alice? Kudos if you remembered. Isn’t it amazing how people can spin events to sound completely normal? And there’s Ferrah giving Kat shit about standing up to bullies…

Minicomi didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped. But I’ve still got two cons to go. My next con is Cos & Effect, in Vancouver. I’m working on doing some very cool shirts right now, I’ll be posting them for preorder soon for interested people.
