So yes, its been a while, but I haven’t been idle. I’ve been building up a backlog so hopefully there will be regular updates. The exact schedule and frequency, I’m not sure, but I’m going for at least once a month, but there could be more. We’ll see how things go. Hopefully this helps ease the back to school blues.

Chapter 3 Pg 41

Well, its not really an April fool’s joke, since this is a legit page, but its probably more of a tease than I’d like it to be as I’m not sure when the other pages will get colored. The good news is that there is a backlog and I’m almost done lineart for this issue. The bad news is Che is super busy and hasn’t had time to color them. Starting with the next chapter, we’re going to talk about a shared coloring technique so that we can both color when needed.

The comic does update once a month however with the black and white lineart at my patreon, and color comics when they become available and whatever other goodies I feel like throwing at it. (which hasn’t been much often, I’ll be frank.)

Anyway, if you feel like tossing a few bucks my way and see the lineart updates, you can subscribe. I also post the color pages there first, then everywhere else.

Shifters Chapter 3 Pg 40

Been sitting on this a while, trying to work a page ahead or so in my patreon. Been trying to sort out a bunch of things. For those who don’t know, here’s why I’ve been so quiet.

In March of this year, my mother ended up in the hospital with very serious medical problems. She almost died of toxic shock from a bowel perforation. We also found out while she was in the hospital that she’s got Alzheimer’s, and it got really bad while she was in the hospital. She was very sick, and very out of it for some time. We are still dealing with the ramifications of her medical needs, now and ongoing as well as my family adjusting to a woman who’s really becoming quite different from the woman we all knew as my mother.

I’m doing my best to move forward. I want to, I have to. But it has been understandably hard. Che has also graduated and found herself gainfully employed in the animation industry doing posing for a major animation studio. As a result, she’s been working a lot and her time is very limited to do anything outside of her work. So we’re going to have to have a discussion about what’s going on going forward. Right now she’s colouring pages as she gets the chance, and I’m releasing them to the Patreon in black and white. When the colours are done, I’m posting them here. That’s kind of what’s going on for now until I can find something better. I’m trying to ease myself back into comics.

Che and I will be attending Rainfurrest this september. Che and I managed to score a table in the dealers area, so if you are in the Seattle area, or plan to come to Rainfurrest, please come and say hi.

Shifters Chapter 3 Pg 39

New page. Of course Patreon patrons got to see it first at the beginning of February, which you too can get for less than a cup of designer coffee. *cough* Just saying. Patreon subscribers have been making it possible for me to afford to get these done and pay Che for her time. Although its a bit of a learning curve for me, in terms of how Patreon works, fees, etc, so there might be a bit of adjustment on the horizon as the pledged amount does not reflect the actual payout after fees and such, so that may be happening for March. It won’t affect this month however.

I will be at Vancoufur at the beginning of March. I’m trying to get the second Chapter of Shifters collected and printed, reordering some chapter 1 prints too.

Still plodding along. There will be a patreon stream Q&A this Tuesday, but there may be another public stream later in the week. I tend to stream between 8pm-12am PST, so if you are in that timezone or awake in that time frame, keep an eye out for the stream on social media or patreon.

Chapter 3 Pg 38

Well its a new year, and thanks to our Patreon peeps, a new page! As promised, work was done over Xmas. Working on another page for next month already, should be done very soon, and of course trying to finish the rest of the chapter. Patreon peoples have had this page for a bit longer, and will get the next page earlier, but either way, its good news for all of you! Enjoy.

Still sorting out a lot of stuff, but we’ve made a promise to get at least a page a month (goal on patreon was met), so that’s what we’re going to do. It might be a bit mucky at first, especially after this chapter is finished as Che and I have to work out a style we can both color in, so if one can’t do it, the other can. Bear with us if styles change or are inconsistent for a little while.

In other news, Che and I applied and were accepted for a table at Rainfurrest 2015. This will be our first US con as a pair, my first US con since 2006. So if you happen to be attending that, come visit us! It is in Seattle WA, Sept 24-27.

November Update

I’ve been getting a lot of pokes from people about what’s going on with Shifters. I normally write a monthly update in the forums, but  a lot of people don’t read those, so I’m doing this so people will see it. This is the long detailed version.

A lot of personal stuff has been going on in both Che’s and my own personal lives. Che (our esteemed colorist for those not in the loop) is in her second year of commercial animation at university and is busier than ever. Despite having moved closer to her school, she’s still had to pull her first series of all-nighters to get projects done. To make matters more fun, student loans are not going to cover everything she needs to cover over Dec/Jan, so she’s having to take paying commission work to make ends meet. Sadly this means she can not afford to donate her time for free for coloring Shifters as we had planned. This means if I want her to colour things, I have to a) wait for Christmas break, this begins in Dec., and b) Pay her a page rate to make it worth while to her. Otherwise, she has to take commissions and paying work instead of working on Shifters.

As for me, I’ve had a number of family and some personal issues come up. I had an operation in October and I’m just healing up enough to be feeling more energetic. But I’m now dealing with my mother’s declining health (just got the news she has a mass in her lung. Doctors are investigating), and other family issues (my family is dysfunctional to begin with never mind now with my mom’s health problems) which I expect to get more intense towards Christmas. I’ve also had to take paying work to make my own ends meet from unexpected expenses which of course displaces hobby time. I’ve also been trying to switch to manga studio 5, which, along with new tablet has had me on a bit of a learning curve and makes pages longer to produce. It doesn’t help that currently the pages feature some very difficult to draw action scenes.

I have managed to get some pages done, and will continue to work on getting pages completed. I’m working on getting all the line work complete for the last part of the chapter. I would like to have Che color these as to not totally change colouring styles at the end chapter. (she’s also WAYYYY faster than me at colouring), but I have to pay her to do it, which is going to probably be about $200 to get all the pages coloured to complete the chapter.

Going forward for the next chapter, I suspect I’m going to have to colour it, and I’m trying to figure that out how to best handle it. MS5 has a lot of good features, which I hope to put to use, but I’m just kind of terribad at colouring in general, so we’ll see what I can find that I can do that’s sustainable. Right now, I can’t promise any kind of schedule, but I’m hoping that maybe if I can get this last batch of pages to finish this chapter done to give to Che, we’ll get those ready to go out as updates, and I’ll have some time to get a bit of a buffer done for the new chapter over December for release in the new year once I figure out what the hell I’m going to do. The pages are somewhat easier to draw, so it will hopefully be faster than all this action and backgrounds.

Now, I did say that there was stuff you could do if you want to help. If you want to help, I could use some help with the money to pay for the colouring. If you would like to give a one time donation towards the $200 I need to pay her to get the pages coloured, you can donate to my paypal at shadowsmyst@gmail.com. If there is extra, I will use it to either buy more coloring, or “hire myself” sort of like I would a paying client to work on the comic. I don’t know if anyone gives a crap, but I can livestream it if people are interested in it to make sure I stay honest about working on stuff.

Chapter 3 Pg 37

So, hello everyone. Its been a while, and what a ride its been.

As you can see, we are attempting to get back to the comic after the crazy year its been. A lot of things have been going on.

Firstly, Che, our estemed colorist and my partner in crime for this site has successfully completed her first year of  her University Commercial Animation Program. Because of the intensity of her program, she wasn’t able to do anything outside school work for the year. We are going to try to find a way to work around this for the upcoming year so there can be updates, but they may be slow. We’re playing it by ear, but neither of us wants to give up on Shifters!

As for myself, there was, and still continues to be a lot of drama around my family, although its taken a back seat to the craziness that is helping run a convention. I’m not entirely sure how I got so deep into this whole thing, but stuff happened and snowballed and I got a lot more responsibility that I had originally signed up for. That is all going to come to a head at the end of June, when the Convention will be occurring, and hopefully, I can extract myself after that point to a more reasonable level of crazy. It does give me a lot more respect for people who plan these events though.

Chapter 3 Pg 36

I just kind of had this scene of Karma hanging in the air a bit above ferrah, so I had to include it, I know this is dragging out a bit, but bear with me, we’re almost through this.

Now I’m sure it hasn’t escaped everyone’s notice that updates have been a little erratic. I’m very sorry about this, but right now I’m suffering some pretty severe wrist pain, specifically around my thumb. I believe its tendinitis of some form or another. Unfortunately the pain is causing me some serious difficulty in gripping anything with my thumb without shooting pains or just weakness, which includes my tablet pen. I’m also having to often wear a splint, just to get some relief from the pain, but that obviously prevents me from doing pretty much anything with my right hand.

Obviously with this pain, things have gone a little slower than I would like, and updates may continue to be a little erratic for the future depending on how bad this gets and if I have to get some kind of medical treatment for it. Just more a heads up than anything as to why things have been kind of up and down. But I am still trying to get pages done, but can only do so as my body allows.

Forgot to post this last night, but a friend of mine from the Webcomic Beacon Newscast, Eric Kimball, is doing a kickstarter for his children’s book project. I said I’d pass the word around. Its quite nicely done, and would make a nice addition to the library of any child.

Edit 2:

Okay, maybe its not as clear as I would have liked (seriously, I struggled with this page as far as its composition is concerned), but karma is basically bouncing off ferrah’s face with epic force, thereby slamming it into the pavement. He doesn’t shoot maces out of his feet (which is silly). Originally I wanted to draw him landing on her nose and her kind of flicking him off, but do you know how hard it is to draw a slight nose flick? So I settled for this, I thought it was clearer.  Oh well.
